And so another year draws to a close. I am looking forward to the next one, but not before I’ve reflected on 2017. I’ve been doing that quietly as I worked out my word for 2018.
My word for 2017 was ‘happy’. I can say that I did try to make it so – but it didn’t seem enough. There were times when I felt I was not enough either. But through the sadness, the anger, the feelings of betrayal, I learnt a lot lot. Most of all, I learnt to trust my instincts a lot more and do what I felt was right, and stand up for myself like never before. I am ending the year happy and hopeful. And looking forward to 2018 with excitement.
“Hope
Smiles from the threshold of the year to come,
Whispering ‘it will be happier’…”
― Alfred Tennyson
My Word For 2018
In the process of choosing my word for 2018, two words came to me – ‘create’ and ‘peace’. So I decided to make them into a phrase for the year – create peacefully.
What will ‘create’ mean for me in 2018?
In 2018 I want to venture into new ways of being creative, while pursuing the old ones I’ve tried and haven’t stuck to. Writing and publishing a book or too, creating some videos and revisiting my blogging are all part of what creativity will mean to me. I’m trying my hand at Bullet Journalling again will continue with my weekly gratitude journal. I’m also hoping to complete some courses I’ve started.
What will ‘peace’ mean to me in 2018?
Certainly, not the absence of conflict. I don’t believe that peace is that at all. No, peace for me will mean accepting gracefully and gratefully every experience that 2018 brings. I will mean seeking out more time for reflection. More quiet times.
And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here.
– Wendell Berry
Why I combined both
I want to bring more order into my way of working and creating. No frantic rushing about. Instead, I want to create mindfully and intentionally.
What is Word Of Year all about?
In case you’re wondering what this word of the year business is all about, let me explain. I came across the idea that it is better to choose one word/ phrase for the year than have a list of New Year’s resolutions that don’t work. I know it helps me to see my life through the lens of that one word/phrase and focus on it. It helps me go through the year more positively and not feel burdened by guilt about resolutions I didn’t keep.
After 3 years of using this method consistently, I recommend it to you as something you should try. Check out Modern Gypsy’s workbook to work on your word of the year.
What is your word/phrase for 2018? Do share.

That’s great, Corinne. I hope you find inspiration and unleash your creativity this 2018. I had two-three words in mind, but somehow I wasn’t feeling good about it. I think I found one today. Will soon write a post and link up. Happy 2018!
Thanks, Shalz. Looking forward to reading your post.
great post, corinne.. my word is peace.. peace of mind. peace to the world.
wishing you and yous a very happy new year! xoxo
Seems that we have a word in common. So nice to connect after so long. Thanks for stopping by, Betty.
I should do this probably…. definitely better than making resolutions that will get dropped half way.
Good luck with your phrase, Corinne. I wish 2018 turns out to be better for you 🙂
Looking forward to knowing what your word/phrase is, Bhavya.
Thanks for your wishes. Right back at you! ♥
When I read about “word of the year” on your fb post, I went retrospective. The year gone by had unearthed the word for me. But now I wish to take charge and define it for myself. I have a word in my mind now and will sure come up with a post that touches base on year gone by and the year to come!
Anagha, you really should try this exercise. It’s worth the effort! 🙂
This post made me think of my last year’s word and if it was helpful. THis year I want to keep my positive spirit on. Creating peacefully without rush is great. I want to do that too in the coming year.
Great idea, Mahathi. Off to read your post!
I’m taking a different path this year – not choosing a word. The last three years, I totally lost focus. Just staying positive is a challenge for me. Knowing some of what you experienced in 2017, I wish you peace and many opportunities to be creative in quiet times. Ah, quiet times. Yes.
I hadn’t really thought about #woty but your post has set me thinking. Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and peaceful 2018
I love the idea of creating peacefully 🙂 Happy New Year Corinne! I hope 2018 is kind to you and you have all the inspiration in the world to create peacefully

Creating peacefully… sounds very intriguing. I love how that phrase came up, and I hope the year is guided by the phrase. 🙂 I don’t believe peace is absence of conflict either. That notion never made sense to me.
these are two beautiful words that you have picked for the year. I don’t have a word yet. But I like the word Create… it is something that I want to continue doing.
Wish you a wonderful and blessed year ahead.
Really liked the idea and I hope this helps me too to be more positive, Have a creative & peaceful 2018! 🙂
Your word of the year is the real power if followed. Create peacefully- I read and learnt the reasons behind. I highly appreciate your thinking.
I like your unique phrase for your Word of the Year. Honestly, I wasn’t aware of the WOTY challenge. So, I will pick one. Thanks for the inspiration!
As you already know, my word of the year is authenticity. I don’t have a lot more usable years to go, so it’s time to shake the world up a little and get better known for more success. The worst thing that could happen is that I achieve a bit more happiness, which ties into your word for 2017! 🙂
Thank you… I needed to do this, taking stock of 2017 to begin 2018 on a fresh note.
Create and happy – great words, the kind we need every day. To create whatever it is that our hearts are set on and to do it happily, find happiness in all that we create.
WIsh you a lot of happy creativity, dear Corinne! And, also a lot of peace! <3
Corrine, I wish I would have known you a few years back. I have not known such a positive personality ever. You inspired me to choose my word of this year. Hope it helps me grow positively.
I love your phrase for this year! Create was my WOTY in 2016 and I loved its energy! My WOTY for 2018 is Bloom. I can’t wait to see how it unfolds!
Wish you a wonderful 2018. 🙂
Stumbled upon this post just now. This is a great activity. I think I’m going to find my word as well. Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
