I’ve shared a poem called ‘When Someone Deeply Listens To You‘ by John Fox here before. Today, I was reflecting again on the often underestimated power of deep listening and I’m sharing them here.
When Someone Listens To You Deeply
When someone listens to you deeply
You feel that you are completely understood and accepted.
You feel like you are coming out of a long, dark tunnel and approaching the light.
You feel that finally it’s okay to be you.
The you that has been hidden
Under masks covering layers of hurt and guilt.
The you that has been cowering in the corners
Hoping that you won’t be found out
Because if they find you out
They will laugh, they will mock
They will break you again and again.
But when that someone comes into your life
You start to realise that you are not alone.
Your dreams wonderful
Because someone cares to listen to them.
Your feelings are real
Because someone cares enough to understand them
You find that there is healing for your pain
And that you are not alone in feeling it
When someone listens to you deeply
You come alive!

Sadly most people want other people to listen to them rather than listen to others. It is a gift to patiently hear things out and just knowing that you have someone with whom you can share your burden helps make things better.
