Today is Christmas day. We’re really not into celebrating the festival in any grand way. No exchange of presents. But I’d like to reflect on the gift of presence today.
Growing up, I’ve seen too much of frantic rushing around to make Christmas just so! Family getting cross with each other because things were not going to plan, or someone was not pulling their weight. The need to put up a good front added pressure. Christmas left me feeling empty and lonely. I didn’t realize that my introverted self was having a hard time coping. Having understood this in recent years, I guard my energy and time around this season. I’d rather spend time in reflection and having quiet, special meals with my husband.
This beautiful story, is a powerful reminder of just how important the gift of presence is.
In a world so full of hate and despair, I think the best thing we can offer each other is our authentic presence. And in the last few weeks, I’ve made a conscious effort to carve out time to spend with others. This is something I want to continue to do in 2024. Offering the gift of presence to people.
Who are you giving your ‘presence’ to this Christmas? Think of someone who needs to be ‘held’ and be there for them. Give the greatest gift you can give – yourself.
Have a meaningful Christmas!
