Summer’s here in some countries and coming, and though you won’t get to show off your summer body, it’s not a bad idea to be staying fit during the summer lockdown. While being indoors so much has its upsides, the risk of eating as often as you breathe is quite high. Nevertheless, don’t let go just because you can’t go to the gym, you can still break a sweat in the comfort of your home.
There are a handful of alternative activities that you can add to your daily routine. If you try your best to stick to these principles, best believe that you’ll be coming out of the lockdown looking fit, healthy, and absolutely fabulous.
Staying Fit During the Summer Lockdown – 5 Essential Lifestyle Changes
#1 Eat Healthy
Lockdown or not, the most important factor to consider if you want to stay fit is eating healthy. Now more than ever, it’s important to take control of your health, by watching what you eat; seeing as you’re probably leading a sedentary lifestyle. Sure, there’s the temptation to binge on a lot of sweet and salty food, but you don’t have to act on that urge every single time.
Instead, use the extra time on your hands to try out new, healthy recipes. Also, read cookbooks or surf the Internet for new interpretations of classic unhealthy meals, so you won’t feel like you’re depriving yourself.
# 2 Use Apps
While visiting a gym might be impossible, you can still get a solid workout in at home. Simply search for one of the numerous fitness apps available in your app store and you’re good to go.
With these easy-to-use apps, you can work out at any given intensity and even target specific parts of your body. Even better is the fact that a lot of these apps are free, so, you can get quality instruction without spending a dime.
# 3 Watch Videos/ TV
This is a little retro, but workout TV programs are making a huge comeback with more people being confined to the four walls of their homes. Bringing it a little more into the modern world, many fitness experts have YouTube channels, so you can pick someone you like and get started.
Since you’ll be interacting with a screen for an extended period, get yourself the correct eyewear, so you don’t make your eyes suffer while the rest of your body thrives. Also, some trainers go the extra mile to give you dietary recommendations, as such, you’ll see stellar results in no time. So, dust off your exercise mat, plant yourself in front of a screen, and get to work!
#4 Do Some Housework
Did you know that cleaning the windows burns up to 150 calories every half hour? Or that gardening burns off 200 calories at the same time? Being in on this information should make you look at housework in a whole new light.
Even though you’ve probably got nothing but time on your hands, it won’t hurt to kill two birds with one stone. So, if there’s an old room that needs some spring cleaning, get out your cleaning supplies and burn those calories.
#5 Run Outside
Nothing quite beats the feeling of fresh air, which is why it’s such a good idea to get your running shoes and go for a jog once in a while. Luckily, most countries allow people to run and keep fit even with the lockdown in place. So, you can run in the park and even compete in virtual races, while maintaining a safe distance from others. This is also a great time to discover and learn new jogging routes, or indulge in fartlek training.
We hope with these few tips; you can find a way to keep your body and mind fit, even in these trying times.

I feel hungry often. In fact, at times I feel I am forever hungry! But I have noticed that if I just drink a glass or two of water, the hunger vanishes. So maybe I need to drink more water instead of eat!
I feel yoga and walking indoors also makes for a good workout.

Okay, I will look it up but what is “fartlek” ? I appreciate your practical suggestions and the choices you provide. Some of what you say is so me; comfort food, sedentary lifestyle. Walking the dog helps and doing laundry gets me off my seat. I should however, move my office closer to the laundry so that I actually hear when the washer stops and the dryer buzzes. Thanks for another good post. Michele
These are great tips on how to stay healthy while staying home. I’ve been trying to walk some mornings, but I know I can do a lot more. The apps and videos are a great idea!
I think I’m eating healthier now with mostly home-cooked food rather than packed items like earlier. But I’ve been struggling to find a suitable fitness routine. Fitness apps are a gem! Been doing yoga lately, hope to keep it going. š
