This morning I got an email from a friend whose brother has just separated from his wife. Something my friend wrote struck me quite hard. She said, ‘So many good things are going on in my life, but it’s difficult for me to enjoy them when my family is unhappy.’ It’s as if she didn’t have the permission to be happy while her brother is unhappy.
Sometimes in moments of great happiness I too think of close friends or family who are going through pain and feel quite guilty about being happy. Just this evening I almost felt guilty about anticipating a nice holiday when I know someone I love dearly is not well.
It’s crazy but on one hand our life seems to be a quest for happiness but when it does come we find a hundred reasons not to be happy!
