Spiritual Sunday - The Treasure Within You

I came across this story recently and saved it to share with you as a reflection:

A beggar had been sitting by the side of the road for thirty years. One day a stranger walked by.

"Spare some change?" mumbled the beggar. "I have nothing to give you," said the stranger. Then he asked: "What's that you're sitting on?"  "Nothing, " replied the beggar. "Just an old box. I've been sitting on it for as long as I can remember. "Ever look inside?," asked the stranger.  "No," said the beggar. "What's the point, there's nothing in there."

"Have a look inside," insisted the stranger. The beggar, reluctantly, managed to pry open the lid.  With astonishment, disbelief, and elation, he saw that the box was filled with gold.

How often we're like that beggar - looking all over the place for the 'treasure' - looking for peace, looking for strength, looking for meaning, looking for God - while all the time peace, strength, meaning and God are within us.

Let me share with you this wisdom from Lao Tzu:

Always we hope
someone else has the answer.
some other place will be better,
some other time it will all turn out.

This is it.
no one else has the answer.
no other place will be better,
and it has already turned out.

At the center of your being
you have the answer;
you know who you are
and you know what you want.

There is no need
to run outside
for better seeing.

Nor to peer from a window.
Rather abide at the center of your being;
for the more you leave it, the less you learn.

Search your heart
and see
the way to do
is to be.

The treasure is truly within you - take time to find it.

May you be inspired - everyday!
